The Eye of the Sahara, also known as the Richat Structure, is a geological formation in the Sahara Desert in Mauritania. It has a massive circular shape, resembling an eye. Today, we’ll explore this extraordinary geological formation.
Where is the Eye of the Sahara?

The Eye of the Sahara is located in Mauritania, a country in Northwest Africa. It’s located near Ouadane, deep in the Sahara Desert.
This circular geologic feature spans several kilometers outward. Despite its remote location, it attracts travelers from around the world.
The Eye spans about 40 kilometers in diameter, a giant mark in the desert landscape. In fact, it’s possible to see this geological landmark from space.
How did the Richat Structure form?
Initially, scientists thought it was an impact crater because of its circular shape. However, later studies disproved this theory. Now, it’s believed to be caused by geological processes.
The Richat Structure formed naturally over millions of years. It’s made of layers of sedimentary rock, lifted by geological forces. Over time, wind and water erosion shaped these layers into a dome.
The softer rock eroded more quickly than the harder layers. This created the concentric circles. The Richat Structure is a textbook example of differential erosion.
What’s in the Middle of the Richat Structure?

In the middle of the Richat Structure, there’s a peak made mostly of igneous rocks. These harder rocks resisted erosion better than the surrounding areas.
The middle of the Richat Structure differs from the surrounding layers, which are mainly sedimentary rock. The outside layers of limestone and sandstone rocks vary in hardness.
As a result, the valleys and ridges around the peak have been shaped by erosion over millions of years. So, this is how the Eye of the Sahara forms a circular pattern, like rings.
Has Anyone Ever Been to the Eye of the Sahara?
Because the Eye of the Sahara is in a remote location, it’s often difficult to travel to. But it’s not impossible to reach.
The journey to the Eye involves traveling through harsh desert terrain. The two main types of travelers are geologists and archaeologists.
First, geologists study its geologic origin and processes like erosion. Secondly, archaeologists study the area as there is evidence of human activity such as ancient “hand axes”.
